I started some lettuce, broccoli, tomato, pepper, and parsley seeds indoors using peat pellets that someone gave me I was a bit worried about using them because I kept hearing how they were bad about causing damping off but my tomatoes started sprouting in 4 days. I followed the directions that came with the pellets about adding warm water to them but that is pretty much where I stopped following directions after I watered them with warm weak chamomile tea to help prevent damping off I let the pellets sit for about a day and made sure they were wet all the way to the middle and also to get my nerve up to plant seeds in them like I said I was not real sure about using them but they worked great. I will have to pot them up soon because I don't think the pellets are big enough for the roots of the plants. I also will go ahead and pull the netting off before I pot them up because I found a picture of what can happen if you don't remove the netting. I also heard that watering was an issue but once they expanded fully I covered them with clear plastic and I didn't have any problems.

Roots on a pepper

Here are my tips about using peat pellets to start seeds:
1. Make sure they are wet all the way to the middle.
2. I used warm weak chamomile tea to water the peat pellets.
3. Keep them covered until you see the seeds sprouting up.
4. When you pot them up remove the netting, it pulls off pretty easy.
Here is also a video that is really good.

I hope this helps anyone trying peat pellets for the first time.
My garden has mostly been put to bed for the winter except where the walking onions are planted and the cold frame still has lettuce and spinach growing in it so there isn't much to keep me busy outside. I let myself get pretty down about stuff that really doesn't matter. I felt like the kid that nobody wants on their kick-ball team. My hubs said it was because I have never done anything I wanted to do I was always doing what the kids wanted to do and he also said something about me having ADD and not being able to sit still for a even a minute but I blocked that out and I'm just going with the I'm sad because I don't have anyone to play with anymore (my kids have grown up and found new friends) Thanksgiving and Christmas came and it made me think about everything I should be thankful for and what a Debbie Downer I have been and I am getting back into the swing of things.
On a better note I have been getting gardening catalogs in the mail everyday which is basically like porn to me so I have been busy drooling over all the different varieties of veggies, fruits, and flowers. It is getting close to start winter sowing some seeds if you haven't tried it you should because it is a pretty easy way to start seeds and and you don't have to buy any fancy lights or kick you husband out of his man cave because that is the only room with lots of south facing windows. Here is a good site about winter sowing they will even send you free seeds.

I had a small harvest of green onions, spinach and some herbs from the garden this morning!
We had a little relief from the triple digit heat that we have been having, yesterday we got a 1/2" rain....woot woot I was catching rain in anything that could hold water...(I have got to get a rain barrel). I took some pictures of my plants growing in my yard and I just remembered I didn't take any of my tomato plants I have been picking a few ripe tomatoes. I think maybe the heat is causing them not to ripen like normal because they look healthy and I have a lot of green tomatoes on them I will have to do a little researching about ripening tomatoes.
I have been getting up at 5:30am....(yessss 5:30am) to water everything and do any yard work before it gets hot so I have been stuck inside in the afternoon and thought I would start to organize my sewing and craft room which only last until I find a treasure I forgot about having and then all organizing goes out the window. I found an old lamp shade and I needed a lamp shade for my craft room I decided to "kill two birds with one stone" since all my money is going to the water department I couldn't go out and buy a new one so I made me a cute one for my craft room with out spending any money which makes me, the husband, the plants all happy.
Some of the fabrics and lace that I used for the lamp shade. The dress I bought at Goodwill a couple of months ago I just bought it for the print I knew I could make something out of it. The quilt blocks were my great-grams they are all hand stitched she could sit and piece quilts while babysitting all her great-grand-babies and cooking and cleaning and whippin all our butts with that damn flies swatter or whackin us with that damn yard stick nothing got by her anywayyy..... I took the ones that had stains and used them on the lamp shade since I could hide the stains on the lamp shade.
A lot of plants have a hard time setting blooms in this heat and some just completely stall out. All my tomato plants are showing signs of heat stress.

Heat stressed tomato plant

To get my tomato plants to bloom in this heat I watch the future weather report and when I see we are going to have a so called "cold front" (when the highs drop back down to below 95 (92 is perfect) for the daytime and around 75 at night) about 4-5 days before this cold front comes through I feed my tomato plants with bloom booster it works out really good. You don't have to use bloom booster because the tomato plants would probably set blooms any way but I like the extra insurance.
I have been biting my tongue this weekend because kicking a 65 year old man in the shins on Fathers Day would not be good but my father-in-law picked and took my FIRST RIPE TOMATO!!!!! I would go out to the garden just waiting for that moment of perfect ripeness. I was so ready to slice into that tomato and taste it but when I went to the store my father-in-law went and helped himself to my squash, my basil, cucumbers, and some onions and the one ripe tomato that I had. I know I sound awful but I have tried to help him start his own small garden I always take him all kinds of goodies from my garden and I would let him pick what he wanted if he would just ASK! The man says he doesn't want a garden because he doesn't like messing with one. HE JUST HAS TO ASK! I hate going out there and thinking I'm going to pick something to toss in a salad or dip in some batter to fry up for dinner and it's gone he does this all the time I'm so tired of it! OKAY...... my rant is over... now a 65 year old man will not get kicked in the shins.

I did get to harvest some despite squash bugs, grasshoppers and FIL.
My gardens look like jungles more than gardens but that is how I like it. The hubs would prefer neat straight rows with no flowers in the veggie garden. I told him when he grows a garden he can layout it out how ever he wants.... then he just walks away muttering under his breath that is pretty much how every gardening season starts and that is about all I hear about it until next season. He does plant the potatoes so he gets to plant them how ever he wants (I'm not a total garden bully).

I harvested my garlic a little to early but I was worried they would start rotting in the ground with all the rain we got. It hasn't rained one day since I harvested them.......go figure.

I have been pretty lucky with the garden this season so far I haven't had to replant anything because all of the rain. I know people that are planting there garden for the third time (I think I would just call it quits). I am going to go ahead and pull the rest of my garlic today, they are just floating in mud and I'm scared they are going to rot. You should really stop watering a few weeks before harvesting garlic, too much water will shorten storage life. Here is a link about growing garlic

I'm complaining so much about our rain and crazy weather but I know I'm so very lucky. My heart goes out to the tornado victims in Alabama and Missouri. I have a friend who lost her sister in the Joplin tornado she was pulled from her home and died at the hospital because of blood loss they had ran out of blood. I am going this afternoon to donate blood, my son donated yesterday. I try to give every few months, I just love all the compliments I get when I give blood like "my your veins are so big and nice" and "oh how wonderful your type O blood" I just love all the attention....he he he. I do forget sometimes and I really need to remember to go and give more often so I will be marking it on the calendar as a blood donating date with the husband. http://www.redcrossblood.org/
Thanks for reading and I hope everyone stays safe.
Name a weather hazard and we had it Tornadoes, softball size hail, 90mph winds, wildfires, floods and severe drought in the last 4 months, just in April we had 35 tornadoes touch down. My brother would say we got "b*&%h slapped by mother nature". I'm waiting for all the bugs and the rest of the plagues now. I'm going outside and take a look around to see how everything has been surviving and take some pictures.

Sorry about not posting anything in awhile but waterfowl season is over now soooo on to gardening!!!
I have been doing some seed starting I promise I'm not sitting on my fanny eating cake and ice cream which really doesn't sound to bad right now. I even have pictures to prove it..

These are some tomato seeds I winter sowed the first week of January we had a record snow fall and then started having pretty warm weather so they started sprouting a little early and I freaked out and grabbed anything that held dirt to plant them in I have never had my winter sown tomato seeds sprout this early.

and more pictures of them now

here are the winter sown tomato seeds this morning (March 13th) when I took them out of the cold frame. I'm leaving them in the cold frame and just covering the cold frame with an old blanket if it gets to cold at night.

My pepper seedlings are pretty pampered they get to stay in under warm lights with a fan moving the air around and they get taken outside when it is around 70 degrees which we have had a few of those days. They are getting a little leggy but I think they will be okay.

so basically I treat my tomato seedlings like my red-headed step-kids, all my seedlings get watered with real weak chamomile tea to help prevent damping off.
I also started my sweet potatoes inside on March 7th. I have a real technical way I do this so I thought I would post a picture to go with the instructions on how I start my sweet potatoes. 1. Get a sweet potato. 2. Get a container and put dirt in it. 3. Stick the sweet potato in the dirt. I'm so high tech it is scary.....

I keep the sweet potatoes in a warm place in the house until they start sprouting (which are the sweet potato slips) then start moving them outside when the weather gets nice and warm to start hardening them off. When the sprouts (slips) get about 4 inches long you can brake them off and plant them in the garden or in a container I try to get mine planted out around June 1st. Sweet potatoes are a tropical plant so they like it hot and they are drought resistant and really a trouble free plant to grow. I grow them in the garden by making hills with compost or in a container of compost I have planted them in the garden and in containers and get good results both ways. When you dig them up remember not to move them around to much because the more your sweet potatoes are moved around in storage the sugar in them starts to turn to starch and they won't be as sweet. If you love sweet potatoes you should really try to grow your own the flavor is so much better than store bought. Here is a really cool video by Our Engineered Garden. Here is a good article in "The Current" about growing sweet potatoes.

It is goose season and I didn't get to go duck hunting to much so I thought I better get in on some geese before they were gone. That got me a little bit behind on my seed starting but I did manage to get some seeds started indoors I'll get my list together and will post some pictures and some of the things I do to prevent damping off and to get hard to start pepper seeds to germinate. It was worth it though my son got a banded bird which was really cool for him but I think hubby and me might be leaving him home next time so he will quit getting our bands the kid has good luck he hasn't went one season since he started hunting with out getting a banded bird. The North America Bird Banding Program is a very useful program that helps to better understand the migration, the life span, the survival rate, and population growth to name just a few things that the banding data helps with. They even band hummingbirds...... I know that sounds crazy.
Here is the link to North American Bird Banding Program it has some pretty cool information.
I have been in a competition with the laundry gods and actually winning.
I did make a couple of things for my sewing room with some graphics from The Graphics Fairy.

The wall art is a canvas that I layered with pages from an old phone book and Gesso (Gesso helps the paint from soaking into the support) and then printed off the graphics on tissue paper using the “fast draft” setting on my printer so the ink wouldn’t be heavy on the tissue paper and bleed, then I mod podged them to the canvas. I painted around the dress forms then and added some flowers that I made from an old sweater.
I wish I would have taken a picture of the lamp shade before because it was uuuglyyyyy. I did the same thing with the lamp shade as I did with the canvas using the phone book pages and Gesso (I liked the texture that the pages and Gesso gave the lamp shade). I printed the graphics out on tissue paper on the “fast draft” setting on my printer and mod podged the graphics on to the lampshade and glued black ribbon to the top and bottom of the shade.
I just got the call we will be out of school tomorrow so wish me luck with the laundry gods.
I didn't want to give my hubby a heart attack and just go crazy and organize something around here so I warned him before starting on my seed storage project. I had a little 3 draw cabinet that I got at a garage sale years ago that I had great plans for I know at the time but can't remember what they were at this moment anywayyyy......the plan now is to make it into a little seed storage cabinet.
Here is a before picture and after picture.
Here are some substitutes for ingredients that I have used and had good results with.

Self-rising flour--------1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 tsp. salt, and 1 tsp baking powder.
Baking powder---------1/4 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar.
Buttermilk/sour milk --1 Tbsp white distilled vinegar plus enough milk to make 1 cup.
Fresh Herbs-------------1 tsp dried herbs.
Heavy cream (not for whipping)----3/4 cup milk, 3 Tbsp, 1/3 cup melted butter.

Jeanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09588879673180076842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2894413161710807824.post-2026761042700320852010-12-19T06:22:00.000-08:002011-01-18T12:37:52.846-08:00Last minute gifts

I have been making a some wrist cuffs for Christmas gifts for some friends and thought I would take a picture of my last one before I wrap it. I found the tutorial here they are fun to make and Jennifer Casa's tutorial is real easy to follow. I'm sorry about the pictures but I had to put the cuff bracelet on one hand and take the picture with the other hand and I had two dogs doing figure eight's around my feet so I had to take what I could get. I made this cuff out of some of my grams vintage fabric. I love going through her fabric and her quilt tops it puts me in my happy place and I can ignore my dogs as they knock over my ironing board and iron and all the water pours out of my iron onto the instructions to make this cute wrist cuff. I have to go now and see if the pound needs two more dogs.

Here is my first attempt and it is so strange because I had something in mind and even some of the images that I wanted to use and after playing for a couple of hours (which didn't seem that long at all) I stopped and look at my creation and it wasn't anything that I had planned in my mind but I liked it better.
This is a great soup recipe that is cheap and easy to make, I like serving it with grill cheese or corn bread.
EASY DAY SOUP
3 cups water
3-4 potatoes, diced
3 carrots sliced thin
3 celery sliced thin
1 can whole kernel corn drained
1 can (16oz.) tomato juice
1 onion, diced
2-3 garlic cloves
1 can tomatoes and chilies (I use Rotel brand)
1 lb hamburger (made into small meat balls)
1/2 tsp seasoning salt
1/4 tsp celery salt
1/2 tsp oregano
1/4 cup ketchup

In a large pan, bring water to boil. Add all remaining ingredients together except for the hamburger. When soup comes to a boil again, add hamburger. Turn heat down to medium. Let soup simmer for at least one hour. You can substitute stewed tomatoes for the tomatoes and chilies for a milder soup.

I never had a mole problem when I had my rat terrier he would deliver them to my back door dead and ready to be disposed of....man I miss that dog. I'm trying to get rid of the grubs which is supposed to help get rid of the moles. The weather here has been so nice it is hard to stay indoors. We are supposed to be getting some cold weather this week so I thought that would get me inside and stop thinking about gardening but then the seed catalogs started to arrive and I <strike>love seed catalogs </strike>will not be ordering much this year ( I have to keep repeating that over and over).

I did manage to make a gardening apron using some scrap fabric and my husbands old overalls without dragging my sewing machine outside that sounds strange but I do take my sewing machine outside to sew sometimes when the weather is nice (now I sound strange so I'm going to stop typing now).

I am still alive! I didn't realize how wonderfully simple my life has been until these past few months when it turned into some kind of made for T.V. movie the ending result was I walked out on a really good paying job and then had to go home and tell my family we need to get our "will work for food" signs made up. I have had some rocky months but nothings killed me yet so we are going to be just fine and I am back posting again.

We had our first frost here this last week and I picked my last peppers Nov. 4th. I wasn't able to get anything planted for the fall but some radishes and some leaf lettuce. I'm already thinking about winter sowing, the few plants I tried last season all did really well even the tomato plants. I'm hoping to sit down and this week sometime and go through what did well in my garden, what didn't and what things I need to do different. I know I need to be better prepared for those pesky SVB and fruit worms. I'm also building my mom a small garden for next season. I am making her a trash can composter using this guide I didn't make my holes as big but I made more holes and put them closer together I need to add more but my little drill ran out of power on me, not to bad for my first project. I want to be like Our Engineered Garden when I grow up, he does some great projects and has some great ideas on his blog.
The Tomato Pinworm he is not my friend.... really, they are caterpillars; worms live in soil...at least that is what my son tells me (just great now I have to find out about the whole worm caterpillar thing). I better get some sleep.
This is what I have found out I thought it might be helpful.
